Physical Education

Intent

Our PE curriculum is built to ensure that children not only enjoy taking part in sport, but also to give them an experience of a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed our core values. We are careful not to assume any prior general knowledge or access to physical activity and sport. All children are taught the same rigorous curriculum which meets the expectations set by the National Curriculum for PE. PE lessons are imperative for a child to develop their physical health and well-being, but also understand why being physically healthy is important so that they can thrive in the future. Children will engage in high levels of activity that have a lasting impact on their cardiorespiratory and muscular systems when sustained, while learning skills and concepts relating to a range of sports.

Implementation

At the Bramble Academy, PE is taught as a discrete subject and children get 2 separate lessons a week. This ensures that children are able to develop knowledge skills and understanding in a range of sports as well is developing an appreciation of physical activity that leads towards a long lasting healthy lifestyle. The curriculum has been designed by an experienced PE lead from the area to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum in an engaging and appropriate way. Children are taught by teaching staff and professional learning is supported by an experienced PE leader. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area and after school/lunchtime clubs. We also aim to ensure that the children participate in active lessons outside of their regular PE lessons. This involves incorporating moments within lessons whereby the children can be active. We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.
