Science

At The Bramble Academy we believe that a high quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation, as well as using and applying process skills. Teachers at The Bramble Academy ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences, which allow children to explore their outdoor environment and locality, thus developing their scientific enquiry and investigative skills. They are immersed in scientific vocabulary, which aids children’s knowledge and understanding not only of the topic they are studying, but of the world around them.

Implementation

Science is taught in planned and timetabled blocks to ensure a greater depth of knowledge. Cross-curricular links with other subjects are planned for whenever possible to make learning meaningful and purposeful. We build upon the learning and skill development of the previous years and our curriculum is carefully mapped out to ensure progression and consolidation. At the beginning of every new topic teachers assess children's understanding of the key knowledge for that topic and this is revisited at the end of each topic. Knowledge organisers clearly lay out the key bodies of knowledge that need to be learned and understood. There is a strong focus on the use of key vocabulary and the use of scientific terms throughout all lessons. Every lesson begins with a science starter to revisit previous learning or address any misconceptions. Working scientifically skills are clearly mapped out and embedded into lessons to ensure these skills are being developed as the children progress through the school. Children are offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities, visits, trips and visitors to complement and broaden the curriculum. These are purposeful and link with the knowledge being taught in class. We also utilise specialist science labs/teachers across the trust for more complex topics such as heart dissection in year 6.
