Art

The Art and Design curriculum aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more in-depth understanding of art and design. The curriculum builds skills and knowledge over time but is designed to enable pupils to know how art and design reflects our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. The intent is for pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences; become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques; evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design and to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. A key intent of our curriculum is to have a range of artists reflecting modern British society i.e. different genders, ages, sexualities, gender identities, races, religion and beliefs and disabilities.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design curriculum at the Bramble Academy is based on the National Curriculum and supported by some specialist art teachers from the trust, ensuring a well structured approach to this creative subject. There is a balance of 2D and 3D outcomes planned into the Art and Design curriculum for KS1 and KS2. Throughout each Key Stage, children learn about a range of artists, craftspeople and designers from different times and cultures. They explore a range of starting points for practical work, including themselves, their experiences, stories, natural and man made objects and the local environment. They also investigate different kinds of art, craft and design either in the locality, in original and reproduction form

The children are taught Art as a discrete subject and areas covered include sculpture (including the work of Sir Henry Moore and Giacometti), mosaics, printing, Mexican art, Christian art and symbols, painting, pointillism, graffiti and the works of the Impressionist artists. Success criteria in every Art & Design lesson are set in order to guide children to achieve their potential. This ensures work is demanding and matches the aims of the curriculum. High quality teaching responds to the needs of children. Spiral learning is a key focus of all

formative and summative assessment with teachers actively marking work in lessons in order to identify misconceptions early. High quality input from experts and educational resources complement the delivery of

specialist learning admirably. More detail can be found in our Long Term plans.

The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning supplemented by a range of external visits to galleries.
