EYFS Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum covers seven ‘Areas of Learning’, consisting of three ‘Prime Areas’ and four ’Specific Areas’. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. The skills taught in the Prime Areas are key and underpin those taught through the specific areas. The curriculum also develops the three key Characteristics of Effective Learning: playing, active learning, creating and thinking critically. These areas of learning and key characteristics are used to plan activities for the children based on their individual development, interest and learning needs.

The areas of learning are delivered through a combination of planned, purposeful play, with a balance of adult-led and child-initiated independent activities, and some small group work. Learning takes place both in the classroom and outdoors. Each half term topic and key texts are chosen to develop skills and understanding in each of the seven areas.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

The ways in which the child engages with other people and their environment underpins learning and development across all areas. Playing and Exploring, Active Learning , Creating and Thinking critically are key skills which help the child to develop into an effective and motivated learner.

The seven Areas of Learning

Prime Areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This area focusses on developing children’s positive sense of themselves and of others; respect for others; social skills and a positive disposition to learn.

Communication & Language
Children’s learning and competence in communicating, speaking, listening and understanding must be supported. Children are given the opportunity to practice and develop these skills in a range of different situations.

Physical Development
The skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement are addressed through physical development activities. Children also learn about the importance of keeping healthy through exercise, good health and hygiene.

Specific Areas:

Children will be learning how to read and write simple sentences using a range of reading and writing skills. A good understanding of phonics will help your child to read and write with greater confidence and fluency.

Children will be learning to use numbers from 0-20 and have an understanding of numbers beyond this range. They will be learning how to solve simple problems such as doubling, halving, addition and subtraction. They will also explore properties of shape, space and measures.
